VAL BYNUM, CONCERT PRINCIPAL TO HOLD WORKSHOP FOR ALL AGES
St. James Episcopal Church in Goshen, New York is pleased to announce their new program entitled, “Sharing Our Gifts.”
Our parish has been blessed with so many talented members who want to give back to the community. That is why we initiated this project.
The first FREE Workshop will be conducted by Val Bynum, principal of the Orange County Community Orchestra.
She will be holding a FREE Violin Workshop on Saturday, May 12th and Saturday May 19th at St. James Episcopal Church, 1 St. James Place, Goshen, New York from 10 am to noon.
Valerie Collymore Bynum, originally from the Bronx, New York, began studying the violin with her Julliard trained father. She attended Music and Art high school, then went on to Ithaca College. Within a month after graduation from Ithaca College, she was asked to audition for a seat in the Radio City Music Hall Symphony Orchestra and got it, becoming the first African-American to be hired full time by that orchestra.
Over the years, Val has played in Carnegie Hall, all of the Lincoln Center venues, various orchestras, chamber groups and in recording studios with different artists.
Some of the artists include: Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Dizzy Gillespie, Carmen McRae. She’s also performed live with Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Peggy Lee, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Rogers, and many others.
She also played in the orchestras at the Met’s Summer Ballet season, Alvin Ailey Ballet Company, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Houston Opera Company, Westbury Music Fair, Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, Northern Dutchess Symphony Orchestra, Orange County Community Orchestra, and in the pit orchestras of many Broadway musicals, including Sugar Babies, Pajama Game, Guys and Dolls, Bubblin’ Brown Sugar, The Wiz, Tap, and Phantom to name a few.
She has also played in the orchestra of the Delaware Valley Opera Company.
